FRIEM has been operating in the global power converter market with expertise and reliability for over 70 years. We have a long history of passionate entrepreneurship and innovation.
In 1950, Angelo Pagliai, endowed with a tenacious entrepreneurial attitude, laid the foundation of FRIEM (acronym for Fabbrica Raddrizzatori Impianti Elettrici Milanese). The company designs and manufactures high-power converters for the electrochemical and metal refining industries.
In over 70 years, our industrial know-how has grown alongside our experience, reliability and technological innovation.
Today, with extensive experience in chlor-alkali applications, we produce high-quality converters for electrolytic hydrogen production processes.
Our history
From 1950
1964
The exclusive technological innovation, drives FRIEM towards the leadership in the high current rectifiers market.
1970
FRIEM moves its first steps in the rail and urban electrification market, delivering its technologies to the traction substations.
1984
Proceeding with the technological innovation, FRIEM develops its first power supply for the polysilicon production.
1998
Orietta and Marco Pagliai, daughter and son of the founder, are now at the helm of the company, driving the company towards industrial and management innovations.
2005
The third generation of the funder family starts taking the lead: FRIEM is living a massive development and expands and modernize its headquarter in Segrate. New technologies and converter topologies are becoming part of the know-how.
2018
Counting on a huge experience, FRIEM launches the industrial plan 2018-21: a strategic roadmap that combined a commitment to industrial excellence with a focus on the energy transition. The Company explores the sustainable energy and electric mobility markets.
19-21
New partnerships and dedicated Entities lead FRIEM to supply consulting in power electronic and solutions for emobility and energy storage markets. Green hydrogen is the strategic target within energy Transition.
2022
Fondo Italiano d’investimento SGR, through FITEC, invests in FRIEM to speed up the growth. DynAmp, leader in highaccuracy high-direct-current measuring systems, enters the Group to strengthen the presence in North America and in the heavy industry.
Today
As European leader in the green hydrogen production through electrolysis for large power plants, FRIEM holds a central position in the energy transition. FRIEM is among the top four worldwide players in the high-power rectifiers for the heavy electrolysis industry.

Providing efficient and modular solutions, FRIEM is the perfect partner to sustain hydrogen production through electrolysis for large-scale power plants. We also play a central role in the green hydrogen supply chain and serve as a bridge between renewable energy sources and end-users in both Power-to-Gas and Gas-to-Power processes.
The past embraces the change: from 1950 to 2050
Enhancing experience, reputation and technological know-how, the third generation of the shareholders, who even hold managerial roles, presently lead with the support of Fondo Italiano d’Investimento SGR – an industrial group rooted in tradition while embracing innovation.
In April 2022, Fondo Italiano d’Investimento SGR entered FRIEM’s capital through FITEC (Fondo Italiano Tecnologia e Crescita) with a minority share.

Our headquarters is in Segrate, Milan, where we occupy an industrial area of 11,000 square metres covering a surface area of approximately 11,000 m2, of which 4,000 m2 are dedicated to the production plant and over 2,000 m2 include modern offices and laboratories dedicated to design, research and development activities.
